There are lots of artists who create both paintings and sculptures. Some end up deciding to combine these two mediums, and this can result in some astonishing artworks, as New York-based artist Anastasia Komar shows.
Komar starts by creating abstract acrylic paintings that mainly feature vivid color palettes. She then adds polymer pieces, representing forms from nature and mythology, that emerge from the back of the painting and, in some cases, wrap completely around it. This essentially turns the pieces into a mix of painting and sculpture.
“At first, sculpture and painting were separate aspects of my practice that did not really intersect,” she explained in a recent interview with design boom. “I was doing a summer residency at SVA in 2021 and just through experimentation started combining 3D-printed forms with the paintings because I had an inexplicable urge to fuse these two aspects of my practice.”
Komar’s inspiration for these unusual pieces stems from her research into the “intersection of art and contemporary bioengineering,” with the artist seeking to “elucidate aspects of our reality that increasingly affect the human experience but elude comprehension.”
Komar exhibited her artworks in art galleries across the United States while also sharing them on social media. Check out more of them by scrolling below.
