South Korean artist Joongwon Jeong has been capturing the attention of social media users and art lovers with his intriguing works in which he puts a unique spin on prominent artwork from the past. Jeong takes paintings, murals, and sculptures from the likes of Michelangelo, Vincent Van Gogh, and others, and then replicates them on canvas as hyperrealistic paintings.
So far, Jeong has done paintings of Michelangelo’s God and Adam, Van Gogh’s famed autoportrait, Bernini’s sculpture of Costanza Bonarelli, and many more.
According to the artist, by painting artwork from the past he hopes to offer the audience a new way of thinking about these pieces.
“I
think that drawing pictures is a process of conveying the visual gaze to the
viewer by looking at the object unfamiliarly and expressing it in my own
formative language,” – Jeong tells My Modern Met. “Even familiar
objects are expressed in various shapes depending on the emotions and thoughts
of the observer, the colors and materials used, and the shapes of lines and
brush marks.”
