]]>Bay-Area artist Calvin Ma explores his personal experience with social anxiety by creating sculptures. Ma’s detailed sculpting and texturing techniques can be seen in most of his artworks.
He creates playful characters that are rooted in childhood innocence and imagination. “I believe the tactile activity of playing with them coupled with my active imagination helped establish this passion for the action figure early on. There was something about picking up your favorite hero or villain and creating stories and adventures that captivated me. It felt only natural to tap into this childlike sense of exploration and storytelling through my artwork,” he shared on his website.
His “Homebodies” works feature superheroes or action-type figures with house-like structures complete with doors, windows, and chimneys. As for his “Blend In” works, they feature human-bird hybrid characters with the avian elements as suits of armor protecting the person from their surroundings. Exquisite feathers cover the surface of each sculpture, from the bird headdresses to the body of the humanoid figure.
His upcoming exhibition will take place from July 28 to September 3, 2019, at Sherrie Gallerie in Columbus, Ohio, alongside Erika Sanada.

]]>What makes Faassen’s work unique is the way he combines painting and photography to create one incredible masterpiece. For his Asia Series, his subjects were portrayed behind a frosted sheet of acrylic, creating a distance between the viewer and the subject. The photos are printed on a matte material then Faassen applied thin layers of oil and acrylic paint to the images. Each piece has a “crack” surface as though they have faded in the light.
Faassen has a special interest in Asian culture particularly Japanese art. The concept of Mono no Aware has been greatly influential in his Asia Series artwork. According to the artist, Mono no Aware “translates into a certain awareness of the passing of time. Taking things in slightly melancholicly but with appreciation of beauty at the same time.”

I like the idea of getting it slightly wrong and the bluffing and “cobbling together” of styles that has resulted in some fantastic historical objects,” she wrote on her website.
Even though her work has its own, very specific, aesthetic, it still has a familiar feel to it due to the historical and literary references. Her figurative vessels are all delicately hand-crafted using traditional ceramic techniques.
“They are coil built, then the shape is refined before adding surface decorations of sprigged (press molded) ephemera and modern computer generated enamel decoration over the glaze.”
Her latest exhibition called Taking Tea, which is on view in the Porcelain Room at the Seattle Art Museum until December 6, 2020, features Baroque painting and European porcelain factories, as well as a panel mounted with fragments from 17th and 18th-century shipwrecks.

Guo-Qiang’s installation was part of the multi-part winter exhibition at Australia’s National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, which also include a display of selected China’s famed ancient terracotta warriors. The large-scale exhibit is open to the public until October 13, 2019.

]]>The city is also famous for its large-scale artworks like the Mausoleum of the Giants created by British artist Phlegm. Know for his elongated and bizarre characters, Phlegm transformed an abandoned factory into a museum full of gigantic 3D sculptures.
The artist had done several murals on the city’s old industrial buildings so it’s not a surprise to see Phlegm’s artwork inside a deserted factory complex.
“Mausoleum of the Giants is a thrilling extension of Phlegm’s ongoing efforts to intertwine his surreal and highly imaginative work with existing deteriorating structures,” the Mausoleum of the Giants’s website reads.
The location is perfect for bringing the artist’s iconic characters to life, as his creepy painted murals often sneak across the architecture, filling the abandoned spaces with his famous creatures.
“Imagined as beings whose life spans over thousands of years, these peaceful beasts have seen rivers erode and mountains change. With their final days coming slowly but surely, the giants are ready for their eternal rest, giving everyone enough time to meet them, mourn them and make peace with their ending.”
Though viewing of the Mausoleum of Giants ended April 6, 2019, you can still see the photos of the incredible sculptures below.
