The post Angela Hao is Drawing Japanese Storefronts She Found on Google Maps appeared first on MyTrendTales.
]]>Hao’s illustrations attracted over 120,000 followers to her Instagram page, and they prove you don’t have to see something in person to fully capture its beauty. She uses Google Street View to discover quirky storefronts in Tokyo, Osaka, and other Japanese cities and uses them as inspiration for her amazing works of art.
Hao’s illustrations look straight out of Studio Ghibli movies, and she enjoys adding her own touch of magic to each one. They’re not carbon copies of the buildings she stumbled upon on Google Street View because she enjoys adding all sorts of new elements to the mix to breathe new life into each drawing and make it unique, sometimes even combining the parts of different stores to create a new look.
“I also enjoy changing the storefront structures or combining parts from different stores together to create a new look. Sometimes when I look at a reference photo, I would imagine what if this Raman store was actually a bookstore. I would then start to ‘remodel’ the store on my canvas,” she told My Modern Met.

]]>Holcroft kicked off his journey as an artist while studying graphic design in the early ’90s, during a time of great technological change. He mostly did everything by hand during his time in college and wasn’t prepared for the digital revolution that was about to hit, so he had to go through it on its own.
He embraced digital art during the early 2000s and started developing his personal style, which brought him to where he is today. Making a switch to digital art has been quite a learning curve since he didn’t grow up around computers, but he believes his work eventually benefited from this shift since social media helped him bring it to a larger audience.
Holcroft is now a pretty successful concept artist, whose illustrations perfectly capture the reality of living in a modern world. He wants to find the right balance between good and bad in his work, but most of his illustrations shed light on the negative aspects of the modern world and the injustice he sees all around him.

]]>Naptime Doodler was founded by Debby Tam, a talented illustrator from San Jose, California. Her illustrations are as adorable as it gets and we’ve seen her transform them into everything from stickers and washi tapes to greeting cards and keychains.
Tam started sharing her illustrations on Instagram in 2020, and she opted for the name Naptime Doodler for a reason. She was a new mom who left the corporate world to spend more time with her baby and started drawing while her son was napping in an attempt to unwind, relax, and work on her passion.
Anime movies and cartoons are very clearly her main source of inspiration. She became an Instagram sensation thanks to her illustrations inspired by such Studio Ghibli classics as My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, and Howl’s Moving Castle, but she also enjoys paying homage to other beloved anime, especially Pokémon.
In addition to being a love letter to her favorite anime characters, Tam’s illustrations are often inspired by food, from Pokémon-shaped ice cream cones to Totoro and Jiji taking the form of burgers, macarons, and popsicles.

]]>Lizarralde started this unique series in the late 2000s when he did a floor plan of Fraiser Crane’s apartment from the popular sitcom Frasier. He was a fan of the show and did it as a passion project.
After receiving positive feedback from his friends and social media followers, Lizarralde decided to do several more illustrations, and it soon spanned into a full series.

]]>Lavater is based in Basel, Switzerland, and he enjoyed drawing from a young age, but life took him in many different directions before he re-discovered art again. He studied business administration after failing to get into art school, but that didn’t stop him from gaining 160,000 Instagram followers.
He discovered a new calling in 2011 when he visited a surf camp for the first time, and he was hooked right away. He went everywhere from New Zealand and Australia to Hawaii and California to catch the waves, but there were times when he felt stuck in his landlocked home country of Switzerland, despite its immense natural beauty.
With the nearest ocean hundreds of miles away, Lavater decided to use the power of art to feel closer to the sea. He started working on his surfing-based illustrations in 2016, and his mindful approach made his art a huge hit on Instagram because it reminded people that happiness comes in waves and you just have to wait for the right one to come along.

]]>We’ve seen many artists on Instagram use the power of art to tackle hopes, dreams, fears, and worries we face in the modern world, and Worry Lines is one of them. Her illustrations may look simple, but that’s not stopping them from changing our mindset about complex topics.
She enjoys working with visual puns, idioms, and comic metaphors, and she has a special talent for finding humor in heavy topics. Mental health awareness is one of the most important subjects she explores in her work, and her illustrations and people’s reactions to them helped her overcome her own dark days.
Worry Lines initially started as “an exercise in anti-perfectionism”, according to the author’s interview with Vogue Australia. She often struggled with being a perfectionist, but her mindset changed when she embraced minimalism and started drawing every day.
Worry Lines is now a huge success with over 800,000 Instagram followers and two published books of illustrations – This Book Is for You and You’re Doing Really Well Given the Circumstances.

]]>Abi has come a long way since she first started her Instagram page in 2021, and she attracted over a million followers in just three years. It’s been a joy to watch her skills evolve as she made progress with her illustrations and started working on more complex animated videos.
One thing that didn’t change are the themes she enjoys exploring through her art, and there’s a reason why mushrooms often take center stage. Abi decided to put them front and center because they are “quirky and strange, yet cute little beings”, and it’s extremely fun to come up with personalities for them because there are so many species out there.
Abi’s Mushlings became so popular that she decided to build a whole world around them. In addition to prints and stickers, she’s also selling sweaters, shirts, and plushies inspired by her illustrations, and we’ve recently seen her co-create a board game called Mycelium, where they take center stage.

This Malaysian artist is on a quest to capture Pow Pow’s “catitude” and explore the many sides of her character. It can take 3-5 days to complete each illustration, but they’re always worth the wait.
“I find my inspiration in my little feline companion. Each brushstroke is a journey of discovery as I capture her colors, textures, and emotions of her… Through PowPow, I hope to convey the sassiness and complexity of these beloved creatures,” the artist told Bored Panda.
Cat owners find Studio After Cigs’ illustrations incredibly relatable, and that’s one of the reasons behind the artist’s massive success. Their Instagram page is followed by over 360,000 people, who can’t wait to see what Pow Pow’s next adventure has in store.
