]]>Salt Inkso is one of the most popular artists based in Shanghai, China, who co-founded a revolutionary tattoo studio and piercing shop Inkso. It’s home to some of the leading tattoo artists in this Chinese metropolis, in addition to hosting residencies for high-profile tattoo artists from all around the world.
Salt is one of the most sought-after artists at Inkso, especially after her Instagram page blew up and attracted over 40,000 followers. Her rise to prominence started when she came up with her signature “cats in bags” tattoos, and this quickly became her most popular design on social media and beyond.
Cats get to live their best lives inside the retro net shopping bags in Salt’s tattoos, but they’re usually not the only ones hiding there. From tennis racquets to wine bottles, bags in Salt’s tattoos are filled with all sorts of everyday objects that you can see through the net, and they can reflect the individual interests of cat owners.

]]>Barbeoch is a graduate of the notable Estienne School of arts in Paris, and he was a successful graphic designer before moving to Marseille and deciding to explore the world of tattooing. He founded his own studio Prisme Tattoo and quickly made a name for himself thanks to his ornamental geometric style, using graphic designer software to recreate complex patterns.
Even though most clients seek out Barbeoch for his large-scale ornamental tattoos, he’s no stranger to minimalistic tattoos that are equally inventive. He calls them “motion tattoos”, and they might look ordinary to the naked eye, but the real magic happens once you take a closer look.
Barbeoch uses a transparent film to reveal the hidden motions of his tattoos, which can create an animated effect when the sheet moves across them. He even created an Instagram filter to make it easier to observe the movement of his “motion tattoos”, which usually take the shape of mandalas, blinking eyes, playing cards, and many different objects.

]]>“I mainly draw my inspiration from my own experiences, beliefs, and development throughout my career,” she adds. “The objects I chose to draw are everyday objects but with a slight stylistic or simplistic differences, making them eternal in a way as they never really go ‘out of fashion’ or become unpopular.”
Indeed, her work makes for an interesting fashion statement, drawing quite a massive fanbase (on Instagram alone she has amassed more than 210k followers). But when it comes to her career path, her road was a meandering one – having first gained attention on Tumblr, where she would post photos of her illustrations and tattoos.
“From the positive feedback it got from everyone I started taking appointments and working from my home and studio spaces,” she recalled. “There’s a certain normalized order within the tattoo industry where you gotta first do an apprenticeship, learn all the different styles and then you get the chair and get to develop your own individual style. But this was different to me as I didn’t do an apprenticeship so my style simply developed from the beginning through my own inspiration, meaning rather than everyone walking around with the same designs, people get new and interesting designs, rather than just going to a standard studio, picking a design from the portfolio and ending up leaving with the ‘H & M of tattoos.’”

]]>“I’ve never wanted recognition,” she remarked once, in an interview with Amadeus, “which is why tattooing is great because it’s for someone else.” Born in Marin and raised in San Mateo, Kartomten now lives in Echo Park. She began experimenting with “home-made” tattoo art in her early twenties, and after spending a few years hand-poking at Sang Bleu London, she moved to Los Angeles where she continues to pioneer in making stick and poke tattoos a respected art form.
According to Kartomten, she gave and received her first tattoo when she and her friend hand-poked each other’s fingers. “I started with friends at home in San Francisco,” she recalled. “We wanted to do it then and there, and I had sewing needles and India ink. I became a professional over a long period of time.”
A self-taught tattoo artist through and through, she notes that most of her early clients had never heard of her chosen technique – an ancient form of body art that involves using a sharp point and some ink – but they gave her a chance and liked the results. “I always liked that it’s a lowbrow art form,” she says.

]]>“A paper or a canvas or a skin, are the same, it’s just different material,” she reflected in an interview with Cortex. “I did my first tattoo on myself in high school with a needle and some random ink because I was in love with a stupid guy. Then I went to Nantes and met the best people, I was at school with Ivan he had a super scary tattoo machine, it took me a while before I tried, but once I started I followed him.”
Nowadays, she’s back to hand-poked tattooing, which doesn’t require a machine. The result is a lot more tangible – creating perfect imperfections, which is just the way she likes her art to be. With a background industrial design, Olk says she’s developed an interest in the more simple things in life, which are still able to evoke emotion. “I am very attracted to pop art, mid XXth century graphics and the Renaissance period,” she says. “It’s a long and slow journey, I am still researching and trying new techniques.”
