Fabian Lavater loves art and surfing and equal measure, and he found a creative way to blend two of his biggest passions into one. He’s crafting surfing illustrations with a mindful twist that will inspire you to surf your way to life and weather every storm that comes along.
Lavater is based in Basel, Switzerland, and he enjoyed drawing from a young age, but life took him in many different directions before he re-discovered art again. He studied business administration after failing to get into art school, but that didn’t stop him from gaining 160,000 Instagram followers.
He discovered a new calling in 2011 when he visited a surf camp for the first time, and he was hooked right away. He went everywhere from New Zealand and Australia to Hawaii and California to catch the waves, but there were times when he felt stuck in his landlocked home country of Switzerland, despite its immense natural beauty.
With the nearest ocean hundreds of miles away, Lavater decided to use the power of art to feel closer to the sea. He started working on his surfing-based illustrations in 2016, and his mindful approach made his art a huge hit on Instagram because it reminded people that happiness comes in waves and you just have to wait for the right one to come along.
