Balca is an embroidery artist from Istanbul, Turkey, with a background in fashion design. She graduated from the Department of Fashion and Textile Design at Yeditepe University in 2016 and decided to turn her attention to a craft that’s often been dismissed as old-fashioned by many of her peers – the magical world of embroidery.

Like most embroidery artists, Balca kicked things off by stitching together pretty flowers, but a different subject eventually caught her eye. She kicked off a new era of her journey as an embroidery artist when she decided to focus on stitching together human eyes, using her skills with needle and thread to capture the magnetic power of our gaze.

They say that “eyes are windows to the soul,” and Balca’s body of work proves there’s truth to these words. She mastered the art of capturing the diverse beauty of the human gaze, and her embroidery hoops are truly a sight for sore eyes.

]]> Artists are often inspired by foreign countries and cultures, entirely different from their own, and Angela Hao is a case in point. She’s using her illustrations to put a unique twist on storefronts of tiny shops scattered all around Japan that she found on Google Street View.

Hao’s illustrations attracted over 120,000 followers to her Instagram page, and they prove you don’t have to see something in person to fully capture its beauty. She uses Google Street View to discover quirky storefronts in Tokyo, Osaka, and other Japanese cities and uses them as inspiration for her amazing works of art.

Hao’s illustrations look straight out of Studio Ghibli movies, and she enjoys adding her own touch of magic to each one. They’re not carbon copies of the buildings she stumbled upon on Google Street View because she enjoys adding all sorts of new elements to the mix to breathe new life into each drawing and make it unique, sometimes even combining the parts of different stores to create a new look.

“I also enjoy changing the storefront structures or combining parts from different stores together to create a new look. Sometimes when I look at a reference photo, I would imagine what if this Raman store was actually a bookstore. I would then start to ‘remodel’ the store on my canvas,” she told My Modern Met.

Reshetnak hails from Siberia, but she’s making her jewelry in the English countryside, where she spent most of her life. She describes herself as a botanist and lover of flora, whose amazing creations are inspired by her breathtaking surroundings and the people she loves.

“Each of my jewelry pieces tells a story of plant mythology and folklore and is intricately handmade in the hopes of bringing you closer to nature. My passion for history and botany help infuse each item with ancient meaning, magic, and mystery,” she writes on her official website.

She started making jewelry while looking for a creative outlet that would shake up her work-from-home routine. Her hobby grew into a business which she named Kami Studios in honor of the Japanese Shinto goddess of nature. Her jewelry mostly takes the shape of flowers, fruits, and tiny works of art, and her majestic wearable pieces attracted over 160,000 followers to her Instagram page.

]]> From Grumpy Cat to Doug the Pug, social media has introduced us to many amazing animals over the years, and Moo Deng is the next one in line. This adorable pigmy hippo found viral fame after the staff of the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand started sharing her silly shenanigans online.

Moo Deng was born at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo back in July, and she became a huge hit with zoo visitors long before finding viral fame. The zoo built the hype for her birth by launching an online poll, allowing visitors to choose her name and 20,000 of them decided to go with Moo Deng aka “bouncy pork”.

Moo Deng became a viral sensation outside of Thailand after zookeepers started filming her and sharing her videos online. They show her doing everything from learning how to walk, drinking water, nipping on everything from grass to zookeepers’ knees, and simply being her adorable self.

Moo Deng attracted an influx of visitors to the Khao Kheow Open Zoo, and she’s now a star of her own 24/7 livestream, but her popularity wasn’t without its downsides. The zoo had to implement a five-minute time limit for visitors coming to see her, and they even had to warn them not to harass the animals in any shape or form.

]]> Glass art is a truly magnificent art form, and it has the power to bring all sorts of amazing creatures to life. No one knows this better than David White, who decided to use his glass art to take us millenniums back into the past, to the time when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth.

David White fell in love with glass art during his time at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. This art form came into his life by a happy accident, after he took a glassblowing class to fulfill the art credit requirement.

“After the first glass class, I made sure to include as much glass as my course schedule would fit. After four years of learning to work with the most fickle and beautiful art form in the world, I wanted glass to remain part of my life,” he wrote on his official website.

White’s adventure with glass art continued while he worked as an apprentice for the New Orleans glassblowing icon Andrew Jackson Pollack. He was introduced to flameworking during this time, and this technique eventually became the cornerstone of his artistic process. It helped him craft some of the most stunning dinosaur skeleton sculptures that you’ll ever come across, made entirely of glass.
