Living in a modern world comes with its own set of challenges, and John Holcroft decided to use his art to capture the complexity of life in the digital age. He’s using his concept art to reflect on what he sees around him, no matter how bleak the reality may seem.
Holcroft kicked off his journey as an artist while studying graphic design in the early ’90s, during a time of great technological change. He mostly did everything by hand during his time in college and wasn’t prepared for the digital revolution that was about to hit, so he had to go through it on its own.
He embraced digital art during the early 2000s and started developing his personal style, which brought him to where he is today. Making a switch to digital art has been quite a learning curve since he didn’t grow up around computers, but he believes his work eventually benefited from this shift since social media helped him bring it to a larger audience.
Holcroft is now a pretty successful concept artist, whose illustrations perfectly capture the reality of living in a modern world. He wants to find the right balance between good and bad in his work, but most of his illustrations shed light on the negative aspects of the modern world and the injustice he sees all around him.
