It doesn’t take much to create amazing art if you’re creative and resourceful enough, and Kuronushi is a case in point. This Japanese artist found viral fame thanks to his epic celebrity portraits, which see him using nothing but cardboard and shadows to create something truly extraordinary.
Kuronushi decided to start experimenting with “shadow art” after noticing how impressive the shadow of his daughter looked when projected on a wall. The 23-year-old artists started looking for ways to replicate that magic and decided to use cardboard as a canvas.
His creative process now involves cutting hundreds of pieces of cardboard and later gluing them together to craft his amazing dioramas. They look pretty ordinary at first, but the real magic happens when he rotates them to reveal their true nature, positioning them at the perfect angle to let them cast shadows that will blow your mind.
Kuronushi’s art is mostly rooted in popular culture, and we’ve seen him craft dioramas inspired by his favorite movies, such as Harry Potter and Pirates of the Caribbean. He also paid homage to many of his favorite soccer players, such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, and Neymar.
“Shadow art” is just a hobby for Kuronushi so he only shared a few celebrity portraits since starting his Instagram page, but that didn’t stop him from attracting over 360,000 followers.
