Deconstructing the traditional notion of portraits, Maldives native artist Maldha Mohamed creates captivating paintings that focus on isolated features of the human face. Her fragmented portraits prompt the viewer to go beyond the visual elements on the canvas and try to uncover things that are missing.
“I like the overall mystery behind the fragments. I like to think of them as unfinished conversations and expressed emotions. Something that always lingers,” she shares on her website.
Mohamed describes herself as a “self-taught” artist. She started pursuing a career in art as a 15-year-old girl and later worked in an elementary school as an art teacher. Recently, Mohamed decided to put her entire focus on being a full-time artist.
It is safe to say that Mohamed has accomplished her goal, considering that her paintings received significant recognition in the art world. She had a number of solo shows in recent years while her works were also featured in group exhibitions in her native country and abroad.
Maldha Mohamed also has a devoted following of art lovers on social media. Her Instagram, where she shares her newest paintings, has more than 100K followers.
