With a passion for bright color schemes and an overall sense of optimism, Poppy Almond’s illustrations and designs are just what our Instagram feed craves these days. Based in Leeds, Almond has graduated from Leeds Arts University in 2017, and is since working as a freelance illustrator and designer, on top of running her own Etsy store where she sells anything from custom beaded bracelets to birthday cards.
“I have always loved drawing from an early age and always knew I wanted to study art,” she relayed in an interview with Nine By Nine. “Whilst on my Art and design foundation I came across the printed textiles and surface pattern design course at Leeds Arts University and instantly knew it was for me! Although I wasn’t hugely into textiles I loved being able to apply my illustrations to such a range of surfaces and materials.”
While most of her designs are created digitally, she still relies on traditional tools, with each piece beginning with a doodle, using her trusty fine liner and sketchbook. After some sketching, she further explores her ideas by using an iPad and then transfers her chosen illustrations onto her Mac where she adds patterns, colors, and finishing touches. “I try to relax and try not to think about the work I should be doing and just draw for me,” she notes.
“I get inspiration from everywhere and anything that surrounds me,” says Almond, “be that my dinner, the contents of my shelves or a conversation I have had that day. Of course other amazing designers and illustrators inspire me! Being surrounded and seeing so much amazing work on Instagram pushes me to keep trying to improve my practice.”
Cheer up!
