Ben Young is a former boat builder and avid surfer who managed to translate his love for the ocean into a passionate art calling. This New Zealand-native self-taught artist builds stunning glass sculptures that are inspired by the ocean and appreciated by art enthusiasts all over the world.
Each of Young’s sculptures is completely handmade. He begins the process with a drawing, then cuts the glass by hand and laminates layer by layer in order to get the desired form.
“I do a lot of thinking before I even start to draw or cut,” – says Young.
This is a complicated and long process causing Young to adapt as the artwork is being created.
“I work with 2D shapes and have to figure out how to translate that into a 3D finished piece. Sometimes my starting point changes dramatically as I have to find a way to layer the glass to create certain shapes.” – he adds.
All the effort is well worth it, however, as the finished pieces look stunning. Check out some of them below.
