Woodworking and art often cross paths, even if we don’t often recognize these moments. Wooden furniture, wooden tools, and other pieces made from wood are, in a sense, works of art. Artist and furniture maker Aspen Golann decided to make this connection more pronounced by blending furniture forms with sculpture and social practice.

Golann designs and creates all sorts of intriguing wood pieces ranging from chairs to brushes, brooms, and candle holders. Her pieces often feature quirky design solutions like a wavy wooden spoon, five brooms that share a single handle, and a double-loop brush.

According to Golann, who has been trained as a as a 17th-19th century woodworker, both function and aesthetics play a great part in her designs.

“I find that function often suggests a starting point—like a place to put the hand, a type of anticipated movement, or an expected lifespan of the object,” Golann shared in a recent chat with Colossal.

Golann also runs a non-profit organization The Chairmaker’s Toolbox that aims to foster “access and equity in the field of chairmaking.” Since 2020, when the organization was founded, Golann partnered with a large number of museums, schools, and chairmakers to help woodworkers get necessary training and supplies.
