Jodi Levine will inspire you to roll up your sleeves and get crafting. “Love using items from the supermarket and recycle bin!” reads her Instagram caption (indeed, most of her arts and crafts projects require little to no money). A mother of two and a lifelong crafter, Levine studied painting formerly in RISD before returning to her original passion. “When I look back at my time in art school, I loved every minute of it but I also felt a little lost in that I didn’t fit into any one department,” she later admitted in an interview with David Stark.

“The world has changed so much since I was in school and the word ‘craft’ was perceived very negatively,” she added. “The whole design/DIY/craft world has exploded which is great for those of us that like to make stuff and dabble with lots of media and don’t fit neatly into the art school categories.” It was also great for Levine, having landed the perfect job in the Craft Department at Martha Stewart Living, where she worked for over 19 years.

Now based in Brooklyn with her husband Fred and two sons, Sammy and Lionel, she continues pursuing her passion, transforming everyday items into inspiring ideas. “I look back on what was distracting me from my fine art work and it was what I have ended up doing professionally,” she notes. “But I am so grateful for my fine arts education. It gave me the creative tools needed in any area of design like color, composition and an appreciation for the natural world.”

Now, she passes on her knowledge to others, featuring regularly in programs like The Today Show, MARTHA, NY1, CBS Morning Show, and The View. You can also follow her tips and trick via Instagram. Keep your hands busy!

For *DAY 4* of our holiday craft share-fest Britney Jepsen/ @houselarsbuilt designed the most beautiful menorah that I have ever seen!! (In my 19 years as a craft editor at Martha Stewart Living, I was tasked many times with creating fresh Hanukkah ideas, so I know firsthand how hard it is to reinvent the menorah!) Britney’s work is always gorgeous, original, and she's the original #crafttherainbow -er! 🌈 REPOST from @houselarsbuilt…………………………………… "Thrilled to be participating in a craft share with some of my favorite makers! Every day a different maker shares a handmade gift in a different color to form a rainbow (you know we love a good #crafttherainbow !). Today it’s our turn and we’re been challenged with blue! I’ve been wanting to do a menorah for ages so this was the perfect time to do so. We used my favorite Martha Stewart Christmas tree as our inspiration and turned it into paper flowers, of course. Templates and instructions on Lars today! Make sure you visit the whole squad and see what they’re creating!” ………………………………………………………… This project is a piece of a collaborative effort to spread the love of handmade gifts with 12 crafty makers. Lindsey Bugbee is a creative spirit. Her favorite things include art and calligraphy, wordsmithing on her blog, and traveling with a sketchbook in hand. So it only made sense to dedicate her career to her creative passion. “A passion for art and calligraphy prompted me to start The Postman’s Knock in 2012 as a custom illustration, calligraphy, and graphic design business,” she explains on her website. “I called my business ‘The Postman’s Knock’ because of my love for beautiful snail mail!”

These are disconcerting times. Hernán, Remy, and I have been spending most of the day at home, and everything feels normal, but isn't. We're doing everyday things, but I'm second guessing them. Like — if we need to run to the store for something, I think, "Is it absolutely essential to go out?" Workouts are always done at home in front of the television because the gym is closed and it's cold outside. We're washing our hands until they're cracked and dry. And I can't help but worry about the older members of my family, some of whom have underlying health issues. ⠀ .⠀ I think we're all in that boat, and we're all in this together. The best we can do is, of course, try and take care of those in our communities who need us — and take care of our own physical and mental health. To me, a big part of that is taking time for creativity. If you find yourself with idle time and a racing mind, complete a tutorial. Work in your sketchbook. Fill out a calligraphy worksheet. The TPK blog is full of free project tutorials/printables to keep busy, and now through Thursday, digital products (like worksheets) are 25% off with the code KEEPINGBUSY. See the latest TPK newsletter (link in profile) for details. ⠀ .⠀ As always — stay healthy, stay safe, and I'm thinking of you. ❤⠀ .⠀ #calligraphy #moderncalligraphy #pointedpen #dippen #calligraphyvideo #timelapse #pointedpencalligraphyvideo #writingcalligraphy #writingcalligraphyvideo #coronavirus #inittogether #together #community #creativity #keepingbusy #penmanship #calligraphersofinstagram #positiveattitude #art #artutorial #moderncalligraphyvideo #handwritten #handwriting #obliquepen #brauseef66nib #whitecalligraphy #hanginthere

But as her brand grew, so has her desire shifted towards teaching others her skills, and passing her knowledge onwards. Defining herself as a teacher and a blogger, Bugbee now teaches calligraphy and watercolor painting and shares her tips and tricks on her blog. Noteworthy blogposts include 10 ‘Stuck at Home’ Project Suggestions and The Beginner’s Guide to Modern Calligraphy.

“The best advice I can give about learning calligraphy is you have to enjoy your practice,” she writes. “Yes, use structured resources like an online course or a worksheet, but also let yourself have fun. As you start to get the hang of how to use a dip pen, take on engaging projects.” According to Bugbee, as long as your practice is enjoyable, you’ll continue to hone your skills.

Her blog is a great tool for aspiring calligraphers, but you can also enjoy Bugbee’s work without dipping your pen via Instagram:

Just a bit of encouragement for you: when I started learning calligraphy, I didn't especially have a knack for it. The top two envelopes show my early (2012) attempts, when I was too terrified to use a dip pen! ✍ It was only after months of practice and more trial and error than I care to admit that I started to see results. The bottom envelopes are from 2014, and I only continued to improve from there. 😊 .⠀ My hope in providing calligraphy courses and worksheets is to empower other people to progress quicker than I did. I want you to feel comfortable moving on past faux calligraphy, and I want you to benefit from my mistakes (including using the wrong paper/ink combinations, gripping the pen wrong, the list goes on …)! Take the Beginner's Modern Calligraphy Online Course (link in profile), and in about a month, you'll learn what took me two years to understand. Or, just peruse the articles on the TPK blog for tips and information! Keep a notebook at hand, and write down anything you want to remind yourself later. 📝 .⠀ #throwback #improvement #learningcalligraphy #learncalligraphy #onlinecalligraphycourse #learncalligraphyonline #calligraphyworkshops #beginnercalligraphy #beforeandafter #beginnercalligraphy #snailmail #envelopes #snailmailrevolution #penpals #envelopecalligraphy #decoratedenvelopes #calligraphyimprovement #calligraphyenvelopes #fauxcalligraphy #earlywork #handlettering #moderncalligraphy #calligraphyprogress #practicemakesprogress #calligraphypractice #coloradocalligraphyworkshop #calligraphyworkshop #beginnercalligraphyworkshop #practicecalligraphy #dippencalligraphy #fauxcalligraphy⠀

Maryanne Moodie’s passion for textile and fiber was almost intuitive. “Something about weaving just spoke to me,” she once said in an interview with Diary of a Smart Chick. “I found a loom and taught myself from vintage books. A light just switched on when I started weaving.”

Describing herself as a fiber-obsessed maker, Moodie is best known for applying unexpected color combinations to her nostalgic textile designs. Working between Melbourne and Brooklyn, NY, she divides her time between designing and creating woven wall hangings, developing weaving kits, and teaching sold-out workshops across the world.

“Weaving is something that I am passionate about and get great pleasure from, and so I am able to use my expertise in education to share this passion with others,” she says. “I do love the art of weaving, but the best and most important part of my work is in education. The love and inspiration and energy that I get from my students is the most important part in moving this craft forward and creating newness.”

According to her website, her work is greatly inspired by the intricacies of vintage textiles, traditional costuming, and modern art, as well as the natural world. With a whopping 120k followers on Instagram, and features in publications like New York MagazineAnthology, and O Magazine – Moodie clearly knows what she’s doing.

You can purchase her pieces on Etsy and through online shops and boutiques around the country, or simply enjoy them from afar through Instagram.

For embroidery artist Lauren Holton, the needle and thread came almost intuitively. Amidst the joys and demands of motherhood, she taught herself the art of the stitch, carving out time for embroidery daily to satisfy her insatiable creativity and a love of all things handmade.

“Honestly, I have almost no actual previous experience as an artist,” she relayed in an interview with She’s So Bright. “Somehow embroidery was the thing that really unleashed everything that had been rolling around in my head all this time. I do, however, think I have a pretty good eye for design and color.”

Indeed, scrolling through her Instagram page, color seems to be the driving force throughout her work. Inspired by both nature and interior design, her work includes floral and botanical themes, as well as abstract designs, all immersed in color. “I’ll come up with a color palette that I’m dying to use, let it simmer for a while, and decide what type of content it’s most suited to,” says Holton. “I’m a big fan of both landscapes and interior design (they seem contradictory, I know), and love to pull inspiration from both of those places. I’m also very feminine, so I’m really drawn to floral designs, pink, soft textures, etc., and I think those things definitely influence my designs.”

Her works might just inspire you to get stitching!
