Buenos Aires, Argentina-based digital art studio MOLI recently shared an intriguing new project on social media. Their talented artists created a series of digital illustrations titled Golden Era, which feature vintage tech gadgets being “repaired” with the use of kintsugi.

Kintsugi is a traditional Japanese technique used for repairing broken pottery or other objects, during which broken pieces are joined together using gold or silver. The idea is that the repair should be visible because it is part of the history of the object.

Taking a new approach with kintsugi, MOLI decided to imagine broken pieces of technology being brought back to life with gold. The series features four iconic tech gadgets from Japan, including the original Nintendo Game Boy, a digital watch produced by Seiko, Sony Mega Watchman, and Sony’s vertical PS-F9 turntable, aka The Flamingo.

According to the studio, the goal of the Golden Era series is to pay tribute to Japan’s pop culture and country’s tradition.

“Hidden in the narrow streets of Japan’s urban landscape, tech gems from the 80s are given a second chance to shine,” Moli says about the project. “Through their scars, these nostalgic-driven rescues become time decoration treasures, carrying secrets and stories from another life.”

Charis Tsevis is a talented Greek visual designer who’s behind some of the most impressive digital mosaics you’ll come across on the internet. What makes his style special is the fact that he uses thematic tiles to bring his artwork to life.

Tsevis is mostly inspired by pop culture characters but isn’t a stranger to sports or political figures. In order to recreate them in mosaic format, he links thousands of meticulously selected pieces, with each having a close connection with the subject.

For example, in order to create a mosaic of Beth Harmon, a character from Netflix’s hit show The Queen’s Gambit, he used chess pieces and chessboard squares.

For Leonardo DiCaprio’s mosaic, he opted for hundreds of different photos of the Academy Award-winning actor.

Tsevis’ works have not only managed to capture the attention of common internet users but have also helped him to connect with high-profile clients. So far, he has worked for a number of reputable companies, including Nike, Google, Ferrari, Toyota, and IKEA. His mosaics have also been featured in magazines like Time, Glamour, and The Wall Street Journal.

Tsevis currently works out of his studio located on the island of Cyprus, and he regularly shares his art on Instagram. Check out more of it below.

“I won’t be much without art in general, it pushes me every day, that’s where I see beauty.” That is how Thais Cuny expresses her feelings towards art. The talented French illustrator has been studying arts, design, and graphics for around six years, and her work is nothing less than incredible.

Her life revolves around her studies, her boyfriend, and her cat. She also participates in various exhibitions and workshops locally. Interested in other techniques, Cuny would like to include screen printings in her future illustrations. Choosing the internet as her main and favorite medium, especially Pinterest or Instagram, the artist explains that she needs to receive a daily dose of inspiration so she can function properly.

“I like to take the time to make sketches throughout the day, patterns, characters, nothing very complete. But, that’s what I use to define small compositions in my sketchbook,” she said in an interview for Ballpit. “Subsequently, I take these small sketches on my IPad on which I produce each of my illustrations.”

She prefers illustrating simplified characters with colorful patterns. Her main goal is to find new color palettes that would match, new shapes for backgrounds loaded with all kinds of details.

“I wholeheartedly love to have a style for youth illustration, and that’s what I would like to evolve towards,” she added.

Award-winning art director, graphic designer, and illustrator Peter Tarka is known for producing immersive illustrations using forms, shapes, and bold colors. His mesmerizing visuals have attracted some of the biggest names in the industry, with brands like Apple, Google, Instagram, Microsoft, and LG all magnetized to his fresh, digital aesthetic.

But according to Tarka at least, his fascination with digital aesthetics is in part due to his “horrible” drawing skills. “I started pretty early with Photoshop CS2, which I got from my father’s friend (I’m almost sure this was a pirate copy),” he recalled in an interview with Medium. “I always liked drawing, so I started creating really simple stuff with brushes etc…”

After Photoshop came Adobe Illustrator, which introduced him to vector graphics. “In 2011, I started thinking about giving more depth to my illustrations, so I used simple 3D tools from illustrator and then retouched them in Photoshop to give them a more natural feel,” he explains. “After this I moved onto Cinema 4D, which has turned into my main program along with Photoshop.”

Fully self taught, Tarka had originally studied economics but dropped out of school after obtaining a bachelor degree. Jump forward some years later and he now has a following of over 200k on Instagram, and has won many awards (amongst them a Silver Cannes Lions for Art Direction & Design and a Bronze Cannes Lions for Use of Social Platforms).

His advice to other aspiring artists? “Work hard and get enough time of sleep (repeat until the end of your life).”

Graphic designer and digital artist Alycia Rainaud (aka Maalavidaa), is known for her highly saturated yet dark aesthetic, creating surreal landscapes of oozing color that swirls about. Based in Paris, Rainaud graduated in June 2018 with a Master’s Degree in Graphic Design and has recently started working as an independent director.

Inspired by Jungian therapy and creative exercises, Maalavidaa provides Rainaud a way of self-expression. “My work has always been influenced by publishing design, hybrid books, new technologies, psychology, digital art, visual effects, and experiments,” she relayed in an interview with Murze. “I started studying graphic design more than seven years ago and finally graduated this past June by working on my thesis where I tried to link books to psyche. In the meantime, I started to work as a digital artist more than two years ago, in 2016. Creating Malavida was a way for me to express myself through different media and daily creative work but in a more abstract level.”

“I’ve always been interested and inspired by art in general,” she notes. “I always remember going to all the museums when I was a child and being mesmerized. When I was younger I used to be really focused on dark analog photography but also a lot about abstract art in general. I guess that’s why my works try to bring both of them together.”

Alongside her print-oriented background, she is also experienced with branding, motion design, programming, UI/UX, textile design, laser cutting, 3D printing, offset/screenprinting, cultural mediation and global art direction. And with almost 170k followers on Instagram, she clearly knows what she’s doing.

Shawna X is not one to shy from making a statement. An independent artist, she’s known for her eye-popping images that are created across mediums in digital, spatial, and motion spaces. Her projects tend to revolve around loaded subjects like cultural identity, the modern creative process, and analytical commentaries on social stereotypes.

“I mostly enjoy the pre-project,” she said in an interview with The Creative Independent. Her pre-project state includes: “going into nature, listening to music, reading graphic novels, going to shows or otherwise distracting my mind so it’s completely void of work and just focused on simple pleasures.” According to her, it’s vital that you have a space for yourself to rejuvenate before you dive into any project, as chances are, you’re exerting your creative energy, and also your emotional energy for whatever work you will be doing.

Of course, exerting her creative energy is exactly the thing she’s looking for. In fact, Shawna X admits that what she loves about being an artist is the different ways it pushes her to explore her vulnerability, however painful it is. “I’m a sadist in that way,” she joked. “I love the pain away.”

Being a creator means that the process us equally important as the outcome. “You’re tapping into your inner child, your inner demons, your inner fairy godmother,” she explains. “A lot of times, especially with social media, you just see the output, and so people strive for the output more than the process, and I think I have fallen into that as well.” But with clients as big as Adidas, Samsung, New Yorker, and Dr. Martens, it’s clear that she’s found the secret to staying creative and active.

If you are looking for an Instagram account full of cuteness, you are in the right place! We introduce you to Yee Chong, an artist who only knows how to draw adorable creatures. The Malaysian-born maestro, better known as art_of_silverfox on social media traded the paintbrush for a mouse and immersed himself in digital art. However, his creatures are even more adorable because they are put back into our world.

One of his main characters are foxes, but he draws other animals, as well, like cats, bunnies, sheep, and other out-of-this-world creatures. He says that the whole project started as an experiment, however, in the end, it turned out to be worth it.

“It was meant to be a test on my understanding of light and shadow,” the artist told Bored Panda, “but people seem to like them a lot so I continued ’till now.”

He has already reached a following of almost 100,000 people, and the numbers keep growing with each post.

Scroll down for the drawings and follow him on social media for more.

Buenos Aires, Argentina-based digital art studio MOLI recently shared an intriguing new project on social media. Their talented artists created a series of digital illustrations titled Golden Era, which feature vintage tech gadgets being “repaired” with the use of kintsugi.
