As children many girl and boys learn to braid from their parents or grandparents. But, they usually only learn classic braids, not french braids or fishtail braids, which are much more complicated and take practice and skills. Braids aren’t going out of fashion any time soon as Disney princesses always have the most perfect braids and this hairstyle is having a moment on Instagram. If you’re looking to up your braiding skills, braid queen Elivra Jonsson is here to provide inspiration and teach you how to do your very own complex hairstyles.

Elvria Jonsson’s love for braids is evident on her Instagram page and her hairstyles are far from simplistic. Her braids have intricate designs and she weaves hair scarves and delicate flowers in her hair. Each hairstyle is very different from the last, but the one thing they have in common is that they all feature braids.

Her half-up half-down styles and braided crowns are ideal for any bride or wedding guest and her loose fishtail braids are great for a beach day.

She even teaches her almost 40k followers how to replicate the hairstyles with step-by-step videos that show the final product. Don’t be fooled as it takes a lot of patience and talent to create these amazing braids.

Hairstylist Janine Ker says she was conscious from a young age of hair’s powerful connection to identity and self-expression. “In my last year of high school, we had to complete a Senior Project – I chose haircutting for mine,” she recalled in an interview with Infringe. “I taught myself the basics of cutting hair from a book, then proceeded to cut my friends’ hair, as well as my own, for the next 13 years. As an artist, cutting hair and treating it as a fibre came very naturally to me. I didn’t actually go to Cosmetology school until I was 30!”

With haircutting coming almost naturally to her, it makes sense that she made a career out of it. Nowadays, she’s mostly known for her rainbow-colored buzzcuts, with her designs taking over Instagram slowly but surely. “I tend to gravitate toward floral patterns (no matter how hard I try not to),” she admits.

“I am also very, very nostalgic. I grew up in the 80s (hence my love for geometric fashion) and the 90s, surrounded by residual 70s references,” she added. “So I have found myself inspired by era color schemes I remember from when I was 10: a vintage blouse I bought at a Thrift Store, down to my best friend’s grandmother’s armchair.”

Indeed, there’s an air of nostalgia about her haircuts – a sort of ’80s dream come to life in the form of a buzzcut. But if you want to join in on the hype, beware! With tens and thousands of fans you’ll want to book a haircut well in advance. In the meanwhile, enjoy her hairstyles from afar.

“It’s really diverse in a spectrum of preference! Many of my clients also identify gender neutral or transgender so… the aim is a gender-neutral salon,” she wrote. And so the Vacancy Project began, catering to both men and women.

“I wanted to do a gender-neutral hair salon,” said the hairstylist in an interview with i-D Magazine. “I think [everywhere] will be all gender-neutral in the future,” she said. “I don’t want to give someone a hairstyle just because it’s trendy,” Hosono stressed.
