Illustrator Lucy Sherston finds that the most exciting part of being an artist is constantly learning and developing. In her mind, being an illustrator is like walking through a dense forest, where she gets to cut the overgrowth with each project to see where she’s going more clearly. “But the path is never completely clear, which can be frustrating but ultimately exciting,” she tells It’s Nice That.

Sherston’s art balances between the figurative and the abstract. She’s developed a unique style over time that’s all about taking parts of composition away from her art for balance. With this, she gives the viewer the chance to fill in the gaps.

Working on an iPad helped her with this a lot because she can add and remove visual elements with ease until she’s completely satisfied with the result. “Ironically, using an iPad has made me feel more in touch with drawing, and I think this really comes through in my recent work,” she says.
