João Charrua is a Portuguese origami artist who creates impressive paper masks and portraits. Most of the time, Charrua’s creations feature a surreal note, representing his unusual ideas and reflecting his vivid imagination.

Charrua manages to pack a lot of details into his creations despite using just a single sheet of paper. They feature a wide range of facial expressions, ranging from sad to angry and indifferent, while often containing unusual facial features like horns.

Charrua initially started becoming interested in origami after looking to pick up a fun pastime activity with his daughter. This prompted him to start exploring the art of folding paper further, and he became intrigued by the possibilities that origami offers.

Since then, Charrua became lauded for his exceptional origami works but the artist believes that he still has a lot to learn and explore in the origami world to further hone his skills.

“I think, in a way, I still have much to learn and explore in this universe of folds, and my creative process at this time is somehow associated with my freedom in exploring origami, without constraints or preconceptions, using a range of techniques associated with some improvisation,” Charrua told Origami USA in a recent interview.
