Haitian-American blogger, advocate, and model, Mama Cax couldn’t believe her luck when she was invited to walk in the first-ever White house Fashion show, but here she was, September 15th, 2016, walking the runway, all eyes on her. The event was a celebration of inclusive design, assistive technology, and prosthetics, and Cax ticked all the boxes.

Born Cacsmy Brutus, she was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 14 and was given only 3 weeks to live. Luckily, she survived, but her right leg had to be amputated. “After my amputation, I was left with so many scars,” she shared with The Standard’s blog. “So, for me personally, I had trouble accepting a new body and loving it. And I went on a journey of trying to get to a place where I felt happy, but little did I know that I would bring so many people on that journey with me.”

Now, she uses social media as a platform to talk about body positivity, dismantling the image of what people with disabilities should be or look like. “When it comes to body positivity, it’s not something that I was raised to embrace,” she says. “I think a lot of us are raised in societies where body shaming is a norm. If you don’t look a certain way, you’re not accepted or you’re asked to change.”

Her journey to stardom is one that inspires many, with her undeniable fashion style being an added bonus. Follow her on Instagram for a boost of body positivity.
