]]> Artist Sara Schroeder loved drawing and sketching when she was growing up, but she couldn’t have imagined that it would turn into a full-time job for her. In an interview for Voyage Mia, she recalls: “I took every art class offered by my middle school and high school – so much so that by my senior year there were no more classes left for me to take, and I registered to be a teacher’s aid in the art room, hoping I could make things while I was there.”

When you put in so much time and energy into something, it’s almost guaranteed to turn out as you planned. Today, Schroeder shares her work on her Instagram page where she has over 36,000 followers. But, at one point, she put her art aside and didn’t pick it up for years. It happened when she became a mom and didn’t have as much time as she did before. Luckily, she got a reminder about the importance of art for her life and she continued creating colorful and vibrant pieces.

There have been so many days this summer that art-making became nearly impossible, and my artist heart suffered for it. . There were two weeks in particular that I felt like I might suffocate for not being able to make it into the studio…. . Desperate times called for desperate measures, so I moved my #oldbookrevival journal out to my morning reading chair and set the little side table with #poscapaintpens , pencils, micron pens, and gel pens. Then, each morning while I had coffee, instead of scrolling through Instagram or sorting through emails, I made super simple drawings, experimenting with shapes, a limited color palette, and minimal materials. In some ways it was a struggle to keep it so stark, but in MORE ways it was like a dam was being released. . All this to say, if you gotta do it, find a way – even if it’s not the way you want it or the exact situation you’re dreaming about. Find a way to do at least a little bit. Your heart will be happier for it.
