When it comes to stick-n-poke tattoos, Tatiana Kartomten, aka Tati Compton, is nothing short of a celebrity. With more than 260k followers on Instagram, she only takes bookings a month in advance, working out of Saved Tattoo in LA’s Arts District. But even with so much going on for her, Kartomten admits that she’s not in it for the fame.

“I’ve never wanted recognition,” she remarked once, in an interview with Amadeus, “which is why tattooing is great because it’s for someone else.” Born in Marin and raised in San Mateo, Kartomten now lives in Echo Park. She began experimenting with “home-made” tattoo art in her early twenties, and after spending a few years hand-poking at Sang Bleu London, she moved to Los Angeles where she continues to pioneer in making stick and poke tattoos a respected art form.

According to Kartomten, she gave and received her first tattoo when she and her friend hand-poked each other’s fingers. “I started with friends at home in San Francisco,” she recalled. “We wanted to do it then and there, and I had sewing needles and India ink. I became a professional over a long period of time.”

A self-taught tattoo artist through and through, she notes that most of her early clients had never heard of her chosen technique – an ancient form of body art that involves using a sharp point and some ink – but they gave her a chance and liked the results. “I always liked that it’s a lowbrow art form,” she says.

Tattoo artist Jessica Knapik took the internet by storm when she introduced a cosmic twist into her inked works. Combining makeup tattooing and astrology she created AstroFrecks – dotting freckles on her clients’ faces in the shape of their favorite constellations. Knapik first draws the constellations with a marker, then injects the freckles wherever there’s a star.

“AstroFrecks is a fun technique I created to add a secret personal connection within faux freckle tattoos,” said the Michigan-based tattoo artist in an interview with the Zensa blog. “A client can use their own zodiac constellation, or their Moms, Dads, dogs… anyone they want. After I lay down the structured constellation, I then go back in and do random frecks in other areas, so the constellation is hidden in plain sight on their face. They know where it is, but someone on the street would never notice.”

The freckles themselves fade over time, and Knapik has different colored ink that can be used to match any skin tone. But not all constellations are drawn on the face. “I’ve done quite a few in the chest and shoulder area as well,” she says. “And it doesn’t have to be specifically zodiac constellations either, I’ve had clients do other constellations they love or feel a connection to.”

Looking to upgrade your tea game? We’ve got just the thing for you! A ceramic tea set adorned with prison tattoos. FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE connects the subversive art of Russian criminal tattoos with traditional blue porcelain design, uniting two opposed but equally important and influential strands of Russian art history.

The artist behind this unique project it Valeria Monis. Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, raised in Haifa, and living and working in Tel-Aviv, Israel, Monis has been creating her ceramic sets since graduating in 2015 from Holon Institute of Technology.

Each of her ceramic pieces is designed and crafted incorporating illustrations taken from photographs, personal stories, and the Soviet police prison files. And just like an original tattoo, each plate is a single edition. Now the only question left is: will you dare serve your tea with these sets?

Sometimes tattoos are just that, tattoos. But other times they are featured in museums. Meet tattoo icon, known simply as Roxx. Featured in a 2017 exhibition in The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), her works treat the human body as a canvas, upon which geometric designs twist and curve.

“Tattoo to me is the enhancement and adornment of what nature has already given us,” the LA-based artist said in an interview with Dazed & Confused. “It’s a talisman. Tattoo tells our personal narrative, and makes us feel empowered. Tattoo is also body armour, and then, in another way, tattoo also makes the wearer feel sexier and more attractive.”

“Tattoos have now evolved into a multi-dimensional art form, with styles that appeal to different tastes and sensibilities, from crude hand poke tattoos to heavy black, and everything in between. I also consider tattoo a sacred, cultural art steeped in the history of mankind. It tells the story of history and culture since the invention of fire. I see tattoo on a spectrum that has many facets. It can be so many things – art, ritual, primitive and modern.”
