]]> Contemporary artist Tomokazu Matsuyama was born in Hida-Takayama, Japan and currently lives in Brooklyn, New York. His works bring together aspects of both Eastern and Western aesthetic systems, as to reflect his own bi-cultural experience of growing up between Japan and America.

“By raising questions of national and individual identity through the formal qualities and subject matter of his paintings, Matsuyama examines the “natural chaos” of our social environments and challenges viewers to confront their own conceptions of cultural homogeneity,” his website reads.

Matsuyama is influenced by many subjects, such as “Japanese art from the Edo and Meiji eras, classical Greek and Roman statuary, French Renaissance painting, post-war contemporary art, and the visual language of global, popular culture as embodied by mass-produced commodities.” Check out his latest creations below.

Call my practice a factory if you wish, yet I have this many assistants working together couple of months to finish one damn painting. Yeah it takes forever to payoff but Thats not the point. #dedication is 工房制をとっているのでファクトリー的な言い方されますが一枚にこんだけの人数ぶっこんで数ヶ月かかってやっと一枚完成する感動は、アートの奴隷であるととらえられたいもんです。 若手はいくらあっても制作費が足らない。時間はもっと必要。それは歴史と自分との挑戦があり作品制作がライフワークだからこそ。 くっそ疲れる作家人生満喫中。 I ❤NY
