Paper artist Matthew Shlian is known for his innovative sculptures, combining intricate geometric tessellations with folds and creases to form bas-relief sculptures. The talented artist has been crafting his paper art for several years, defining his work as “folded paper inspired by multiple sources.”
For his latest project, Shlian introduced an exciting color palette including warm and cool tones with gouache washes that add texture and variation to his smooth paper surfaces.
“My process is extremely varied from piece to piece. Often I start without a clear goal in mind, working within a series of limitations. For example on one piece I’ll only use curved folds, or make my lines this length or that angle, etc. Other times I begin with an idea for movement and try to achieve that shape or form somehow,” his website reads.
You can see his work in Context Art Miami from December 4 – 9, 2018. You can also check out his Instagram for updates.
