St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City is one of the most famous landmarks in the world. Aside from its importance in a religious sense, the basilica is also an architectural wonder while housing numerous famous artworks and breathtaking mosaics and glass windows.

It is safe to say that St. Peter’s Basilica is one of the landmarks that everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime. However, not a lot of people have this opportunity. This is why Vatican teamed up with Microsoft and cultural heritage preservation startup Iconem to create a stunning virtual 3D tour you can enjoy from the comfort of your home.

The team behind the project spent several weeks taking photographs and scanning St. Peter’s Basilica and its surroundings. They ended up with 400,000 high-resolution images that were patched together and turned into a virtual tour with the help of artificial intelligence.

Thanks to this, the tour allows viewers to see all of the big and small details and experience the iconic landmark in all of its beauty, perhaps even more than they would if they visited in person.
