In the works of Raleigh, North Carolina-based artist Yumi Okita, colorful threads come together to create realistic embroidery versions of butterflies and moths.
With an impressive eye for detail, Okita manages to recreate intricate patterns found on the wings of these beautiful insects in nature while also creating her own. Her pieces are so convincing and lifelike that you could easily think they are real if it wasn’t for their size and immovable nature.
According to Okita, she was always fascinated with the complex beauty found in the natural world.
“I have always been drawn to things that seem fragile, yet hide their strength and cruelty – beautiful and yet grotesque, such as insects and plants,” Okita explains.
What makes Okita’s creations even more impressive is the fact that the artist doesn’t use sketches for her works. Instead, she decides on the form and colors and then lets her creativity do the rest.
Okita has been creating these intriguing pieces for more than a decade, and her embroidery butterflies and moths have become quite popular among fiber art enthusiasts and collectors while being featured in a number of exhibits. You can check out more of them by scrolling below.
